Medication Aide

This course emphasizes the role of the medication aide as a valuable member of any health care team. This course focuses on legal mandates for medications and proper administration in various routes utilizing the "rights" and three safety checks of medication administration. This course introduces basic terminology related to medication administration and drug reference. The course will focus on medication actions, safe dosage ranges, adverse reactions, and impact on body systems. (2 credits - 1 lecture, 1 lab) 48 hours

Students will apply classroom learning in the laboratory setting promoting safe medication administration.
 
To successfully complete the course, students must: 

  • achieve a cumulative score of 75% or higher on chapter quizzes and final knowledge exam;  
  • demonstrate competency of skills by passing the final skills exam; and 
  • meet the class attendance requirements with a minimum of 48 hours.

ÃÛÌÒTV law governs the qualifications required to work as a medication aide in a licensed nursing home. To work as a medication aide in a skilled nursing facility, individuals must have completed a nursing assistant training program that is approved by the ÃÛÌÒTV Department of Health before starting a medication aide training program.

It is recommended that you work as a certified nursing assistant six months before taking this course.

You must be at least 18 years of age before the course begins.
 

REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS: Hartman's Complete Guide for the Medication Aide, 1st Edition, approximately $25 (Available at Riverland bookstore. May be purchased elsewhere.)

LOCATION: On-campus sessions will meet at Riverland Community College – Austin WEST Campus*  Note that you can work the online hours at any time; disregard timeframe noted in schedule.

SPECIAL NOTICE: You must be at least 18 years old, been employed as a nursing assistant for a minimum of six months prior to the start of the class, and should be proficient in the English language.

Mandatory attendance of ALL class sessions is required. 

You will need Internet connection. Students need to check their Riverland email address daily.  Upon registering, you will receive a user name, password, and login instructions via email to access the  Brightspace system for coursework.
